JOB TITLE: Police Officer

RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position is responsible to assist fellow officers with interdepartmental duties and city activities; responding to the needs of the general public by performing rescues, giving information and direction, mediating disputes and deterring criminal activity within the community; compiling reports, preparing cases for trial and appearing in court; maintaining and updating records for proper documentation; working to achieve the highest level of cooperation and to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of law enforcement within the City of Clarkston.

MAJOR DUTIES:
•Patrols City of Clarkston to detect and deter criminal activity and traffic violations.
•Responds to calls relayed by communications officers, including domestic disputes, assaults, burglaries, traffic accidents, lost or missing persons searches, public service duties, stranded motorists, and others.
•Enforces Federal, State, and local laws by performing warrant, felony or misdemeanor arrests; implements physical confrontation when necessary; protects the civil rights of persons in custody.
•Enforces traffic and parking laws through the issuance of citations and warnings; performs routine inspections of roadways, bridges and traffic signals and signs to find and report any hazardous conditions;
•Conducts preliminary investigations into traffic accidents and other incidents, including interviewing victims, complainants and witnesses, gathering information and evidence, and securing crime scenes.
•Apprehends, arrests, and processes offenders, including fugitives; summons witnesses.
•Provides assistance and backup support to other officers as necessary.
•Provides first aid and CPR to victims as necessary and assists motorists.
•Provides traffic direction as needed for events such as parades, funerals, ball games, and school crossings.
•Presents evidence and testimony in courts of law; assists in prosecuting felony and misdemeanor cases.
•Assists stranded motorists, directs traffic when necessary; escorts special processions; transports prisoners to jail.
•Completes all required reports and forms, including accident and incident reports.
•Inspects and maintains an assigned patrol car and uniform. Maintains assigned uniform, vehicles, and equipment in accordance with departmental policy and procedures;
•Serves and executes criminal and traffic warrants on felony and misdemeanor suspects.
•Attends ongoing training classes as required.
•Participates in community relations projects as required.
•Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or equivalent; Associate’s degree or two (2) years college coursework preferred; valid Georgia Drivers license US citizen; at least 21 years of age; Must be Georgia P.O.S.T. Certified. Successful completion of the pre employment process which includes oral interview, background check, criminal records and traffic history check, medical and drug screening, polygraph evaluation, and/or voice stress, successful completion of Police Academy; valid State of Georgia Driver’s License; equivalent combination of education and experience.

JOB TITLE: Police Sergeant

RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position is directly subordinate to the position of Captain in the department, but may be held accountable to any superior officer. The work of this position involves performing administrative duties and coordinating manpower and equipment resources to ensure the effective performance of general patrol, traffic control and emergency assistance activities on an assigned shift. Duties may be performed independently in accordance with departmental rules and regulations; general orders and supervision are received from a higher authority. Specific instructions regarding non-routine situations may be given or received. Work is received through observation of results and evaluations of reports submitted. As a first line supervisor this position exercises the authority as a Shift Commander within the chain of command of the department. Assignment and hours of duty for this position are very flexible and will be made with the interests of the department as the final determining factor.
 
 
  • MAJOR DUTIES:
  • Supervises personnel on assigned shift to assure adherence to department rules, regulations, and policies; monitors performance of personnel.
  • Coordinate personnel, administrative paperwork; communicates information from senior officers.
  • Communicates with other shift supervisors to gather information on problems or areas requiring attention.
  • Serves as back-up unit in general patrol, traffic control or emergency assistance activities on assigned shift.
  • Performs weapons, equipment, uniform and personal appearance inspections.
  • Oversees maintenance for assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Observes all sectors and assists other units; enforces laws, investigates crimes and accidents; responds to all major calls to assist and advise; maintains surveillance of suspicious persons; interviews suspects, complainants, and witnesses; supervises preservation of evidence, investigation of clues, and arrest of any suspects.
  • Checks and approves reports; reviews all reports and case files submitted during shift; completes incident and accident reports.
  • Prepares investigative reports and memoranda.
  • Prepares time cards and maintains daily time sheets, pay logs, and overtime and compensatory time logs.
  • Oversees the training of new personnel and assists in identification of training needs of subordinate personnel.
  • Reviews and evaluates subordinate employee performance; prepares performance evaluations; recommends disciplinary action as necessary;
  • Testifies in judicial proceedings as necessary.
  • Assists other agencies and departments with service of arrest warrants, court papers, and subpoenas.
  • Attends training and supervisory meetings as required.
  • Participates in community relations projects as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Associate’s degree with course work in political science, criminology, criminal justice or related field required; Bachelor’s preferred; Georgia P.O.S.T. Certified; a minimum of three (3) years experience as a Certified Peace Officer and served in a supervisory capacity as a Corporal; valid State of Georgia Driver’s License; equivalent combination of education and experience.
