Milam Park In 1927
Mrs. Sadie Ray observed that children didn’t seem to be out running and playing and making the most of the freedom of childhood. Galvanized into action and marshaled by the tenacity of Mrs. A.P. Milam, the mothers and women of Clarkston forged a plan to ask the city council to support a public park. Mr. P.R.G. Clark legally made it possible for the city to have his land and just three short months later, in the first week of August 1927, Clark Park opened as the first public park and playground in Dekalb County. Later dedicated to honor the woman that made it possible, Milam Park still operates. Spanning 7.6 acres the park maintains six pavilions for picnics, modern playground equipment, two tennis courts, one softball field and one multi use field.

Clarkston Dog Park
In October 2008 the Mayor and Council approved
to build a dog park to be located in Milam Park.
the dog park is open every day from sunrise to sunset.
Rules for use are posted at the park.  Waste stations are available and dog owners must pick up after their dogs.
A dog watering fountain has been installed for the
comfort of your pet.  The area is naturally shaded by large trees for comfort.

DOG PARK RULES
All use of the dog park is at your own risk.

All dogs must wear a collar and ID tag with the owner’s name and number.

All dogs must be controllable by their handler (at least 18 years old) at all times while in the park.

All dogs must be properly licensed, must be healthy and must have current vaccinations.

Aggressive dogs are not allowed.

Please be careful to close all gates when entering and leaving the dog park.

All dog waste, must be removed.  Please make use of the pet waste stations provided for you.

The dog park may be closed by the City from time to time for maintenance.

No alcoholic beverages or smoking allowed.

Pittbulls and Rottweilers Not permitted.

Milam Tennis Courts  

Under a USTA Grant, one full size court was converted it into (4) 36ft permanent courts and the other into a 78ft court with 60ft blended lines.
(ALL Tennis court users pay a refundable $10 key fee)
$9.00 per person, per hour for court use only
Additional $9.00 per hour when lights are used

MILAM POOL
The Milam pool is currently closed for renovation.

Friendship Forest
4380 East Ponce de Leon Avenue

Friendship Forest boasts a lush, green 15.14 acres of fields, stands of trees and streams. Named by Andrew Byrd, a second grader at Jolly Elementary in a contest sponsored by the Clarkston Park Steering Committee and the DeKalb County Department of Recreation, Friendship marked its beginnings as a park and recreation facility. In March 2002, the City of Clarkston designated it as public greenspace and in May of 2003 it was renamed Friendship Forest. Under the ceaseless efforts of the Friends of Friendship the area is currently being transformed into a wildlife sanctuary by the Friends of Friendship Forest.

With plans to open this area to the public, interested Naturalist may soon see many varieties of wildlife including birds, butterflies, small mammals and all manner of vegetation.

Recently I discovered the following web site concerning coyotes in urban areas as well as giving some very extensive, educational and interesting information about them. Many photos are included. It is relieving to discover that they are not very dangerous and can be beneficial in an urban environment.
